Let’s play a game...

June 04, 2009 Michael AugustineLisez en Francais

Okay, it’s time to have some fun. Let’s play a game called ‘what if.’

What if you were a kid and you couldn’t run, or play tag or baseball, or go swimming? What if you suddenly went blind, or deaf, or became unable to even feed yourself? How much fun would that game be? Not much!

But this isn’t just a ‘what if’ - it’s a cold reality. Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with between 55,000 and 75,000 Canadians living with MS... and sadly some of those affected are children. As children, having MS means a life of unpleasant realities and harsh circumstances, but thanks to the MS Society of Canada, these boys and girls can still enjoy what it means to be a kid - they can still have fun!

This summer, children and teens (ages 8-18) with a diagnosis of MS from all across Canada will again be invited to apply to the MS Society of Canada Summer Adventure Camp, an all-expenses paid week-long camp situated in Perth, Ontario, from August 15th-21st, 2009. The Summer Adventure Camp is held at the fully accessible Easter Seals Camp Merrywood and will feature activities such as sailing, arts & crafts, kayaking, drama and, yes, games! While nurses from the Hospital for Sick Children’s Paediatric MS clinic will be at the camp, there will be no MS-specific programming.  Instead, camp participants will step away from their daily lives with MS for a fun, memorable summer adventure. All expenses associated with attending the camp (including travel) are covered, thanks to a third year of generous funding from the RBC Foundation and the Fondation Bergeron-Jetté.

For further information on how to apply please visit the MS Society website or call the Camp Manager at 1-866-922-6065 Extension 3049, or in the Toronto area at (416) 967-3049.

Every child should be allowed to have fun. I’m very proud we can make that happen!

Irreverently yours,

Aug, who’s indulging his inner child...
